Clinical Studies With Cefoperazone in the Treatment of Peritonitis and/or Intraabdominal Abscesses in Surgical Practice

Abstract
Cefoperazone was given to 28 surgical patients who had peritonitis and/or intraabdominal abscesses.
A dose of 1 to 2g bid was administered intravenously for an average of 8 days.
22 patients were cured, 2 improved, and 4 failed (traumatic gastric rupture with other associated organ injury; necrotizing pancreatitis; perforated duodenal ulcer; multiple intraabdominal abscesses after gastric cancer surgery). The satisfactory clinical response rate (which includes cure and improvement) was 85.7%.
12 patients had mixed infections, a single pathogen was isolated from 10 patients, and no organism was identified in 6 patients.
The better clinical results were observed in patients with a single infection and I patients that no organism was identified.
The response rate according to the isolated organisms were; 9 of 11 Escheriche coli, 8 of 12 Streptococci (including 1 of 3 enterococci), 2 of 2 Klebsiella pneumoniae, and 1 of 2 Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
No side effects were observed and there were no abnormal laboratory findings.
